Laser weapons: Fact from Fiction

Technology firms direct energy on evolving laser technology from the lab to the field. Light sabers and blasters in Star Wars, phasers on Star Trek, the heat-ray in War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, and rayguns and death rays in myriad films from the 1960s and 1970s. The phrase "laser weapon" most often conjures images of these and other fictional, futuristic devices. In reality, laser weapons are currently undergoing testing and likely to be fielded in the very near future.

CONTRACT WINS
Quality Performance hardware selected for U.S. Navy, Coast Guard shipboard navigation systems
Quality Performance Inc. won contracts in excess of 1,980,000 (USD) for equipment to be used by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard shipboard navigation systems. The systems will be installed over several months and scheduled for completion by March 2011.

ViaSat wins 5.75M (USD) to provide technical equipment, services to SPAWAR Atlantic
ViaSat won a 5.75M (USD) indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ), firm-fixed-price contract for tactical data link and satellite communications equipment and engineering support services from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic in Charleston, S.C. The contract combines purchases for the U.S. Navy (75 percent), and the government of the Republic of Turkey (25 percent) under the Foreign Military Sales program.

Missile warning systems from Northrop Grumman to equip Marine Corps medium- and heavy-lift helicopters
U.S. Marine Corps officials needed infrared missile warning systems to protect their fleets of medium- and heavy-lift of helicopters from heat-seeking missiles -- particularly from shoulder-fired ground-to-air missiles. They found their solution from the Northrop Grumman Corp. Electronic Systems sector in Rolling Meadows, Ill.

Boeing F-15 Silent Eagle demonstrator makes first flight
Boeing's Silent Eagle flight demonstrator aircraft F-15E1 completed its first flight from Lambert St. Louis International Airport. During the 80-minute flight, F-15E1 opened and closed its left-side Conformal Weapons Bay, which contained an AIM-120 Instrumented Test Vehicle (ITV) missile. The ITV was not launched.

F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter will not be at Farnborough this year, but 787 Dreamliner will make its public debut
Those hoping to get a glimpse of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) at the Farnborough Air Show later this month unfortunately will be disappointed. Leaders of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) decided to send neither JSF aircraft nor anyone from the F-35 Joint Program Office to the influential Farnborough International Airshow July 19 to 25 in Farnborough, England, according to DOD Buzz.

F-15 Silent Eagle stealth fighter could be considered as alternative to F-35 joint strike fighter amid tight budgets

The Boeing Co. may be stealing a march on rival defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. with the radar-evading F-15 Silent Eagle stealth fighter, designs for which made a demonstrator flight last week in St. Louis. As a stealth aircraft, the 1970s-vintage F-15 jet fighter may be a viable near-term alternative to the Lockheed Martin F-35 joint strike fighter in some applications.

New Space Gallery at Seattle Museum of Flight breaks ground
Seattle’s Museum of Flight broke ground on the first phase of its new 15,500-square-foot “Human Space Flight Gallery.” While the Museum has long planned to expand its space exhibits, the new state-of-the-art gallery is a precondition to being awarded one of the retiring United States Space Shuttles, which may be delivered on the back of a Boeing 747 as early as July, 2011.
