3M claims record efficacy for green LED
3M has combined its color-converting material with a blue LED chip to produce a green emitter with an efficacy of 181 lm/W at 350 mA. The converter material is a cadmium zinc selenide (CdZnSe) quantum well structure that can be bonded at the chip- or wafer-level.
Boston trials LED street lights on the Common
A test installation of acorn-style LED streetlights, three each from six different manufacturers, will enable the evaluation of energy usage and aesthetic impacts. The project is part of Mayor Thomas Menino's efforts to "green" Boston.
UL 8750 safety standard for LED lighting is published
After nearly three years in development, ANSI/UL 8750 “Safety Standard for Light Emitting Diode (LED) Equipment for Use in Lighting Products” has now been published.
FTC proposes new output-based labels for light bulbs
The US Federal Trade Commission is calling for public comments on a proposal to introduce a new labeling system for light bulbs, including LED lamps. The proposal is to create a two-panel labeling format: a front panel with brightness and energy cost information, and a Lighting Facts label with additional information on the side or rear panel.

Osram Opto unveils OLED light source
Osram Opto Semiconductors has introduced its first OLED light source, which is aimed at premium-quality functional lighting applications such as architecture, hotels and catering, offices, private homes and shops. The Orbeos OLED panel has a round lamp surface of 80mm diameter, is 2.1mm thick and weighs 24g.
Konica Minolta to build pilot production line for OLED lighting
With an investment of 3.5 billion yen, Konica Minolta plans to build a roll-to-roll pilot coating line.
LILi project aims for lower cost of OLED manufacturing
Applied Materials, Merck KGaA, and Braunschweig University have been awarded funding for OLED research by the German government.
US government funds DuPont OLED innovation
DuPont has been awarded a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a two-year project to develop a solid-state lighting source using low-cost OLED solution-processing manufacturing techniques.

California mandates TVs with lower power consumption
The California Energy Commission has placed limits on the power consumption of new TVs, according to their size. For example, a 42-inch screen must consume 183 watts or less by 2011 and 115 watts or less by 2013.
Philips Canlyte invests in LED clean room in Montreal
Lighting manufacturer Canlyte will invest $500,000 to build a controlled environment for the production of LED-based lighting products.

Edison Opto introduces linear-type LED, EdiLine III
