:: Navy on the verge of major shipboard electronics breakthroughs

Open-architecture and COTS technologies are critical for advances in ship propulsion, navigation and guidance, weapons control, ballistic missile defense, modular mission packages, and related systems for the nation’s maritime defense. The U.S. Navy achieved significant shipbuilding and technology development milestones in 2009, recovering from the previous year, which was marked by cost overruns in the Zumwalt-class destroyer (DDG-1000) and Freedom-class littoral combat ship (LCS-1) programs that led to congressional criticism.




CONTRACT WINS

:: ManTech wins $40 million to provide engineering, technical support to Naval Surface Warfare Center
ManTech International Corp., a provider of technologies and solutions for mission-criticalnational security programs, won a $40 million contract from the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Indian Head Division to provide engineering, technical, system safety, human system integration (HSI), training, and program management support. The single award, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract has one base-year and four option years.

:: SAIC wins $47.6 million contract by Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) won a contract from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) to provide technical and engineering support services for security, surveillance, andunmanned systems. This single-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, five-year contract valued at $47.6 million includes three, one-year award terms and has a potential value of more than $63 million, if all award terms are exercised. Work will be performed in San Diego.

:: L-3 Interstate Electronics wins $20 million USMC contract for VideoScout-MC2 RVET systems
L-3 Interstate Electronics Corp. (IEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corp., won a $20.9 million contract to provide new VideoScout-MC2 Remote Video Exploitation Terminals (RVET) to the United States Marine Corps.


TECHNOLOGY TRENDS

:: Night vision devices for military bomb-disposal suits is objective of JIEDDO industry solicitation
Leaders of the Joint Improvised Explosives Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) in the Pentagon are asking industry to integrated night-vision devices into explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) protective bomb suits to enable bomb-disposal experts who search for, clear, and neutralize roadside bombs to operate at night or in limited illumination.

:: Lockheed Martin tests Joint Air-To-Ground Missile (JAGM) tri-mode seeker
Lockheed Martin completed a wide-ranging series of tests on the multi-mode seeker for its Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) system. JAGM will provide a precision, adverse weather, low-collateral-damage weapon to rotary- and fixed-wing pilots, as well as the unmanned aerial system community.

:: American Science and Engineering wins ZBV X-ray inspection orders from U.S. and Middle Eastern governments
American Science and Engineering Inc. (AS&E), a supplier of X-ray detection solutions, won a service and maintenance order for $2.5 million from the U.S. government to support Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) X-ray inspection systems for strategic missions in harsh environments.

:: BAE Systems to equip military all-terrain vehicles with thermal cameras
BAE Systems will provide Oshkosh Corp. with thermal cameras for 2,399 mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles (M-ATVs) under a $45 million multi-year contract. The thermal cameras enable crews to view surroundings while remaining within the vehicle's protective armor.
