Dr Lin comes to the journal from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, where he is group leader for the NanoMagnetism Laboratory, a professor in the Department of Physics, and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica. 98, 162108 High-performance gate-all-around polycrystalline silicon nanowire with silicon nanocrystals nonvolatile memory

Nonvolatile memory (NVM) that is based on gate-all-around (GAA) and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) nanowires structure with silicon nanocrystals (NCs) as the storage nodes is demonstrated. The GAA poly-Si–SiO₂–Si₃N₄–SiO₂–poly-Si (SONOS) NVMs are also fabricated and compared. The GAA NCs NVMs have a 4.2 V of threshold voltage shift at 18 V for 1 ms, and are faster than the GAA SONOS NVMs do. In reliability studies, this NVM shows superior endurance after 104 program/erase (P/E) cycles, and loses only 14% of its charges lose after ten years at 85°C.

98, 153107 Micromagnetic study of spin wave propagation in bicomponent magnonic crystal waveguides

The propagation of spin waves in bicomponent magnonic crystal waveguides has been investigated by micromagnetic simulations. The nanostructured waveguides studied are regular square lattice arrays of circular Fe dots embedded in an yttrium iron garnet matrix. Simulations show that the waveguides exhibit wide magnonic band gaps of the order of 10 GHz. Band gap tunability, arising from variations in the filling fraction, lattice constant, and applied magnetic field has been demonstrated. The findings would be of value to the efficient transmission and processing of microwave signals on the nanoscale by means of spin waves.

APL142903RH Soft generators using dielectric elastomers

A soft dielectric elastomer generator, whose stretchable circuit elements are integrated within the membrane, is presented. The unprecedented combination of softness, flexibility and low mass provide an opportunity to harvest energy from environmental sources with much greater simplicity than previously possible. This simple generator consists solely of rubber membranes and carbon grease mounted in a frame. Featured in USA Today.
