APL's 50th Anniversary!
The first year of Applied Physics Letters ran approximately 15 articles every two weeks. Since the first issue, the Journal has evolved to meet the changing needs of the scientific community and to follow the trends of the applied physics field. In the last issue of 2011, a week’s worth of Applied Physics Letters amounts to more than 160 articles across a broad range of topics, all highly-relevant and highly-cited. Now, as APL enters its fiftieth year of serving the needs of physicists and scientists around the globe, we invite you to not only look back at the most highly cited papers from the past 50 years, but also to look forward to another 50 exciting years on the cutting edge of scientific discovery!

Research Highlights
A high-reflectivity, ambient-stable graphene mirror for neutral atomic and molecular beams P. Sutter, M. Minniti, P. Albrecht, D. Farías, R. Miranda, and E. Sutter Easily-cleaned epitaxial graphene films on ruthenium substrates serve as improved mirrors for He and H2 beams, which could translate to more efficient and higher resolution atomic and molecular beam spectroscopy.
Appl. Phys. Lett. 99, 211907 (2011)
Spin injection from two-dimensional electron and hole gases in resonant tunneling diodes Y. Galvão Gobato, H. V. A. Galeti, L. F. dos Santos, V. López-Richard, D. F. Cesar, G. E. Marques, M. J. S. P. Brasil, M. Orlita, J. Kunc, D. K. Maude, M. Henini, and R. J. Airey The authors investigate the polarized-resolved photoluminescence from the contact layers and the quantum-well in an n-type GaAs/GaAlAs resonant tunneling diode for magnetic fields up to 19 T. The results show that these two dimensional gases act as spin-polarized sources for carriers tunneling through the well in resonant tunneling diodes.
Appl. Phys. Lett. 99, 233507 (2011)
Resonant-tunnelling-diode oscillators operating at frequencies above 1.1 THz Michael Feiginov, Cezary Sydlo, Oleg Cojocari, and Peter Meissner The RTD oscillators under study are extremely compact (less than a square millimeter) room-temperature sources of coherent cw THz radiation. Such sources should enable plenty of real-world THz applications.

AIP Publishing Unveils New Cover Design for Its Portfolio of Journals
Consistent new look brings higher visibility to AIP’s robust suite of physical science journals
AIP Publishing will start the New Year with new cover designs for its portfolio of leading journals. The coherent new look will give each journal a fresh, consistent appearance without altering any of the high-quality content that the physics community has relied on for years. The new look, which is already familiar to users of the publisher’s online journals, will make its debut with 2012 print editions of these AIP Publishing journals: Applied Physics Letters, Chaos, Journal of Applied Physics, The Journal of Chemical Physics, Journal of Mathematical Physics, Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, Low Temperature Physics, Physics of Fluids, Physics of Plasmas, and Review of Scientific Instruments. The online-only journals AIP Advances, Biomicrofluidics, Journal of Laser Applications, and Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy also feature the same look on their homepages.
